This is the question on the minds of many of us who couldn't bear to watch the election news on Tuesday evening and woke up with a feeling of dread. I make no apologies for my opinions about our president-elect BUT I was reminded by Todd Cullen that God makes or breaks a leader...Daniel 2:20-23.
I was reading a blog this morning (http://christianschooljournal.blogspot.com) and this one sentence jumped out at me: " Sound doctrine transcends political ideology, party affiliation, and cultural and ethnic identification. In this sense, Christianity is always trans-political and trans-cultural." This is what I've been saying all along, just not with the big words! (Remember I work with kids...we keep it simple).
I was talking to some of our teens in Bluffton last night about this exact concept. (I love that they are paying attention to issues and have opinions!) One of the girls explained that her reason for liking Obama over McCain was because she supports abortion...and that the Republicans ruined our country, but was unable to explain why she believed this...just that all our financial problems are the sole result of Republicans. (NOTE: I am not a registered Republican or Democrat...or anything else...I vote based on my Christian values). It was a heated discussion to say the least...she even walked away in anger because we disagreed. After explaining that our opinions are not personal attacks and that we respected her right to have an opinion, she came back. I just wanted her to understand that in forming our values and opinions we should be listening to what God says to us, not what others are telling us and we NEED TO DO OUR HOMEWORK. I want our young people to LEARN to make EDUCATED decisions based on what they KNOW, not solely on what they hear from others and read in the media. Our kids need to know that decisions must be a result of what we know to be right and true...as told to us in God's Word! We are responsible to teach our students how to think biblically and how to apply biblical thinking to specific issues and LIFE.
But the great thing about our God and this country is that we have the freedom to choose what we believe. I know what I believe...God will bring glory to His kingdom...in spite of our government leaders...Republican, Democrat or otherwise. HE REIGNS. PERIOD!
